The right way to pull pet hair out of cloth seats

Vacuuming alone never gets it. If you have a shedding dog you already know the feeling: you run the vacuum over the back seat, it looks better, and then you sit down and there is still hair everywhere. That is because pet hair does not sit on top of cloth. It weaves into it.

Why the vacuum loses

Cloth upholstery is a loop, not a flat surface. Hair works its way down between the fibers and static electricity holds it there. A vacuum pulls air across the top, and the hair underneath simply does not move. You have to break the static and lift the hair out of the weave first. Only then does vacuuming do anything.

What actually works

Our order of operations on a heavy pet-hair job:

• A rubber pet-hair brush, or a plain rubber squeegee. Drag it across the fabric in one direction, always the same direction. The rubber grabs the hair and rolls it into rows you can lift off.
• Damp rubber gloves for seams, bolsters and anywhere a tool will not reach. Run your hand along the fabric and the hair balls up in front of it.
• A light mist of water first if the hair is really embedded. Damp, not wet. Water kills the static that is holding it down.
• Vacuum last, with a crevice tool, once the hair is sitting on the surface instead of buried in it.

What to avoid

Do not soak the seat. Water that gets down into the foam takes days to dry and comes back as a musty smell, which is a worse problem than the hair was. Do not use a pumice stone or anything abrasive on leather, vinyl or Alcantara: it works on carpet and it will wreck everything else. And skip the lint roller on a whole seat. It is fine for a jacket, but on upholstery it will take an hour and pull fabric fuzz along with the hair.

How long it honestly takes

Be realistic about the time. A heavily shedded back seat is thirty to forty-five minutes of repetitive work. That is most of what you are paying for on an interior job. Not a magic product, just someone willing to do the same motion two hundred times until the seat is actually clean.
