How often should you really wash your car in Cincinnati?

There is no single right number, and anyone who gives you one is guessing. How often you should wash depends on where the car sits, what season it is, and what is landing on it. In Cincinnati that changes four times a year.

Winter is the season that actually matters

This is the one that damages cars here. Ohio road crews run salt brine, and brine is harder on a car than rock salt because it is a liquid. It gets into seams, under the rockers and up into the frame where you cannot see it or rinse it by accident. In salt season we would wash every one to two weeks, and the priority is not the paint, it is the undercarriage. A touchless wash with an undercarriage rinse is genuinely better than nothing on a February afternoon.

Spring: pollen and sap

Pollen is not just ugly. It is mildly acidic and it holds moisture against the clear coat. Tree sap is worse, because it hardens, and once it cures it needs a solvent instead of soap. The rule in spring is speed rather than frequency: get sap off within a few days, and pollen off every couple of weeks.

Summer: bugs, birds and heat

Bug splatter and bird droppings are acidic enough to etch clear coat within days when a panel is hot, and a hot panel is most of a Cincinnati July. Spot-clean those the day you notice them instead of waiting for wash day. And never wash in direct sun. Soap and water dry on the panel before you can rinse, and you trade dirt for water spots.

Fall: the part you cannot see

Leaves collect in the cowl at the base of the windshield and in the trunk channels, then sit there holding water and rotting. That is how you end up with a damp floor and a smell in January. Clear those drains in the fall even when the paint looks fine.

A simple rhythm

If you want one answer: every two weeks most of the year, every week when there is salt on the road, and spot-clean anything organic the day it lands. Do that and you will almost never need paint correction.
